| Human Rights Charter | | The Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities is a law that protects the basic political and civil human rights of all people in Victoria. The Charter provides protection for individuals, not corporations.
The Charter complements other laws such as Equal Opportunity legislation and protects basic rights such as freedom of speech, freedom from forced work and freedom from degrading treatment which previously had no legal protection. The charter sets out a list of 20 rights that assist all people to live with freedom, respect, equality and dignity.
The Charter requires all public authorities and their employees to act compatibly with human rights in the delivery of services and when making decisions.
Cardinia Shire Council’s decision-making process will be conducted after consideration of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006.
Key responsibilities that will apply include:
| |
 | respecting and promoting human rights | | acting compatibly with the Charter when making decisions | | supporting others to act compatibly with the Charter. |
